攀岩

With the discovery of a rockclimbing gym within access of my apartment, life seems a little more complete. The best is feeling physically tired, with sore muscles and newly developing caluses. The best is finishing a new bouldering route. The best is watching the grace of an experienced climber.

The gym is in a large building with a skylight roof. It feels open and there are often birds inside chirping and lots of light. It's also the home of indoor soccer leagues, a fencing team and a sports bar.

It's an amazing (and terribly humbling) thing to watch children climb. It's effortless and natural to them. What for you requires mental focus and physcial exertion, to them is just play.

It feels great to climb well, to move smoothly and deliberately from hold to hold.

It's a different experience climbing here. Age variety, international, skill variety. In the middle of a climb, I'm asked to translate an phone call for the manager on duty. I'm learning climbing terms in Chinese.
